Turmeric tea has become one of the most popular wellness drinks in America — and for good reason. This warm, golden-hued cup has been part of Ayurvedic kitchens for centuries, and brewing it well is a small art form. Here's everything you need to get the most out of your cup.
Turmeric in the Ayurvedic Tradition
In Ayurveda, turmeric (haldi) has been a daily kitchen staple for thousands of years. Traditionally, it's stirred into warm milk, simmered in broths, or brewed into golden tea — almost always alongside two companions: ginger, for its bright, spicy character, and black pepper, considered essential for unlocking turmeric's full flavor.
The Black Pepper Pairing
If there's one thing to know about turmeric tea, it's the black pepper pairing. The two have been brewed together in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries — and modern food science backs up the practice: piperine, the compound that gives black pepper its kick, is well-documented to enhance the way the body interacts with curcumin (the compound responsible for turmeric's golden color and earthy flavor). That's why every Herbal Cup turmeric blend is built around this classic pairing — it's not optional, it's part of the tradition.
How to Brew Turmeric Tea Well
Water Temperature
Use water at 200–208°F (just below boiling). Hot enough to extract the deep golden color and the warm, earthy aroma, gentle enough not to scorch the spices.
Steep Time
Steep for a full 10–15 minutes, covered. Most people steep for only 3–5 minutes, which leaves a lot of flavor on the table. Covering the cup also keeps the volatile oils — the source of much of the aroma — from escaping.
A Splash of Fat
Curcumin is fat-soluble, so adding a splash of coconut milk, oat milk, whole milk, or a teaspoon of coconut oil makes the cup smoother and rounder. This is also exactly how Ayurvedic golden milk is traditionally prepared.
